It was a dark night in Connecticut when Mr. Mach and Mr. Whitehouse met at a wayside establishment. “Mr. Whitehouse,” began Mr. Mach, “I find myself dissatisfied with the nature of panels. I seek gentlemen and ladies* of learning to entertain and educate, but the traditional panel sometimes lacks,” he paused, waving his pipe in the air before him, seeking the right word, “the precision that I desire for an event of the caliber of my Steampunk World’s Fair.”

“My good man, I well understand your consternation,” exclaimed Mr. Whitehouse. “What you seek is no mere track of panels, but a Symposium Track.”

This piqued Mr. Mach’s curiosity. “Tell me of your Symposium Track, Mr. Whitehouse. What would comprise such a thing?”

“Well, Mr. Mach, it would comprise many gentlemen and ladies of learning holding forth on many topics of relevance to the times. Topics such as Steampunk cultures beyond the European, the working of found objects into Steampunk treasures. Perhaps Mr. Anders will reprise his discourse on steam technology, and Ms. Goh could revisit the topic of envisioning a better steam society.”

Mr. Mach took a draw from his pipe before replying. “Mr. Whitehouse, I do believe that you may be onto something with this Symposium Track of yours. I would be delighted to have it at my fair. You may speak to my man about the arrangements.” Mr. Mach pulled his pocket watch from his vest pocket and declared, “It has been a pleasure, but I have other appointments to attend to.”

The two gentlemen shook hands warmly and the 2012 Steampunk Word’s Fair Symposium Track was born.

* Technically, Jeff said, “I seek wise persons of any, all, and no genders”, but the concept of genderqueer doesn’t have particularly helpful terms if one is trying to speak in a pseudo-Victorian manner.  ”Genderinvert”?
