CHANGES TO THE PERFORMER APPLICATION

IF YOU ARE CONSIDERING APPLYING AS A PERFORMER/PANELIST THIS YEAR, PLEASE READ:

After March 31st, we will be instigating a $10 “Late Application Fee.” The application itself will still remain open until April 30th. (The $10 fee goes directly to our artistic director’s medical bills – not to the event.)

While we acknowledge the dedication, talent, and other resources many performers invest in honing their skills, late changes to our schedule is difficult for our performance/tech staff. This change is not meant to discourage anyone from performing – but rather, to encourage everyone to be proactive and send us their information early.

Applying early benefits everyone. As a performer, knowing that you are accepted allows you to adjust your schedule accordingly, communicate with the appropriate staff, and get the word out to your fans.

This change is currently an experiment, and will not necessarily be the case for all events to follow. If the additional $10 is an issue for you, please do reach out to us.

If you are considering applying to SPWF, please click here.

The Symposium

Pleasures and curiosities for an enlightened mind.

It was a dark night in Connecticut when Mr. Mach and Mr. Whitehouse met at a wayside establishment. “Mr. Whitehouse,” began Mr. Mach, “I find myself dissatisfied with the nature of panels. I seek gentlemen and ladies* of learning to entertain and educate, but the traditional panel sometimes lacks,” he paused, waving his pipe in the air before him, seeking the right word, “the precision that I desire for an event of the caliber of my Steampunk World’s Fair.”

“My good man, I well understand your consternation,” exclaimed Mr. Whitehouse. “What you seek is no mere track of panels, but a Symposium Track.”

This piqued Mr. Mach’s curiosity. “Tell me of your Symposium Track, Mr. Whitehouse. What would comprise such a thing?”

“Well, Mr. Mach, it would comprise many gentlemen and ladies of learning holding forth on many topics of relevance to the times. Topics such as Steampunk cultures beyond the European, the working of found objects into Steampunk treasures. Perhaps Mr. Anders will reprise his discourse on steam technology, and Ms. Goh could revisit the topic of envisioning a better steam society.”

Mr. Mach took a draw from his pipe before replying. “Mr. Whitehouse, I do believe that you may be onto something with this Symposium Track of yours. I would be delighted to have it at my fair. You may speak to my man about the arrangements.” Mr. Mach pulled his pocket watch from his vest pocket and declared, “It has been a pleasure, but I have other appointments to attend to.”

The two gentlemen shook hands warmly and the 2012 Steampunk Word’s Fair Symposium Track was born.

* Technically, Jeff said, “I seek wise persons of any, all, and no genders”, but the concept of genderqueer doesn’t have particularly helpful terms if one is trying to speak in a pseudo-Victorian manner.  ”Genderinvert”?

Emilie P. Bush

Emilie P. Bush is a Steampunk novelist, a journalist, and a bestselling children’s book author. Her first novel, Chenda and the Airship Brofman, was an Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Semi-finalist in 2010 and her follow up tale, The Gospel According to Verdu, picks up where Chenda left off – high in the skies and wild with adventure. Emilie’s children’s book, Her Majesty’s Explorer: a Steampunk Bedtime Story, is the world’s first Steampunk picture book, and recently hit #1 on Amazon’s Hot New Releases Bestseller List.

Emilie P. Bush lives with her family in Atlanta, where she is an Editor with Steampunk Chronicle and writes both fiction and non-fiction and tours the country contributing to a variety of conventions and writer’s groups

Lia Habel

Lia Habel was born in Jamestown, NY, and has lived there the majority of her life. Her first book, Dearly, Departed, is a sweeping tale of zombie-living romance set in a cyber-Victorian/steampunk future. When Dearly, Departed sold, Lia was swimming in debt incurred from her studies and years of un- and underemployment, with only a few dollars to her name. Miss Habel enjoys attending anachronistic and steampunk events, watching zombie movies (she has watched over a hundred of them), commissioning ball gowns, and collecting Victorian and Edwardian books. She is incredibly grateful for the opportunities she has recently been given.

David Lee

Director at Hatton Cross Steampunk

Producer at AB Productions

David is the principal artist at Hatton Cross Steampunk. David’s steampunk art has been featured at the “Steampunk Bizzare Exhibit” with Dr. Grymm in the Mark Twain Museum in Hartford CT and has had exhibits in various steampunk conventions on the east coast. His “Gentleman’s Flying Apparatus” aka “The Morgan Aeronautical Destroyer of Satan’s Arrogance” has been nominated for “Best non-goggle accessory” in the Steampunk Chronicle’s Readers Choice Awards. He is a contributing “DIY” author for the Steampunk Chronicle as well as Gothla Magazine (online) and owns a small production company that produces instructional DVDs. He recently signed with the publisher Hypatia Press and expects to release his first steampunk novel entitled “The Great Loons Disease of 1865″ in summer of 2012. With the upcoming release of his novel, David intends on producing a short film containing exerpts from the story with the intent of a full feature film someday.

His personal motto is “Anything worth doing is worth overdoing!” and applies this to his steampunk creations daily.

The Midway – A Game Is Afoot!

A test of chance,
A test of luck,
What’s the worst?
You lose a buck?

That’s right, the Midway isn’t just about jugglers, fire breathers, fire jugglers, juggle eaters, clowns, tightrope walkers, and destroyers of everything that you see as real…

We also have games!

So come on down to the Midway during the Steampunk World’s Faire and try your hand at these games that are sure to thrill and make you feel like a real human being. Whether its a simple ball in a hoop or cornholing (It’s not what you think, look it up) you are guaranteed to find something that you are good at.

Take a listen to what those fine hawkers tell you, but don’t believe em’. I’ll let you in on a little secret. It’s their job to make you so angry that you HAVE to test your luck and skill at the games. They’ll tell you anything that they think will get you over to the shadiest part of the Steampunk Midway in the hopes that you lose your shirt.

The secret is… get this…. you CAN win at these games. We know you’re good enough and strong enough. We know that the only thing between you and the biggest grandest prize on the Midway is just the fact that you don’t have a ticket to play the games with. Well the only way to fix that is to find yourself a ticket and prove that loud and mean ol’ barker wrong. Let them know that you are not one to be trifled with, and the Midway is yours to command!

You can do it, pop a balloon, sink a ball, sink your time and your wallet into the fabulous and magical Steampunk Midway!

Frenchy and the Punk

New York-based Euro-American duo Frenchy and the Punk have performed all
across the US, and in England, France, Germany and Canada. They’re one of
the top-reviewed live acts in the underground cabaret scene today and they
have been fan favorites at every major steampunk convention and faerie
festival in the US. In 2011 Yahoo Music listed French-born singer and
percussionist, Samantha Stephenson, as one of “25 Women To Watch” in music
and guitarist Scott Helland is listed in the Encyclopedia of Punk with his
legendary first band Deep Wound.

Fusing foot-stompin’ bohemian cabaret, world music, French chanson and
`80′s punk with steampunk flair, vaudeville charm and pixie spirit, the
duo’s performances are a high energy theatrical spectacle. They captivate
crowds by seamlessly blending raucous, danceable old-world melodies with
cheeky stories sung in English and French and exhilarating Taiko meets
Blue Man Group drum and percussion instrumentals.

Stephenson, a performer since her early teens, beams with charisma and
seduces in her sultry neo-vintage cabaret vocal style; think Siouxsie
Sioux meets Karen O meets Edith Piaf. Helland, an Amercian-born guitarist
and punk veteran, creates a wall of sound with his rhythmic live-looping
guitar prowess and catchy melodic lines; think Johnny Ramone meets Django
Reinhardt meets Eugene Hutz. Together this spirited duo manage to create
the sonic expanse and richness of a full band while still retaining the
charm of a vaudeville duo. Visit them at: frenchyandthepunk.com.

SPWF Vendors: Leather and music and corsets, oh my!

We’ve added a few more vendors – we anticipate adding many more! So many, in fact, that we’re giving them their own page (and maybe some addition special attention in the weeks to come.)

SPWF comes but once a year – so you may as well pick out a nifty souvenir and remember all the fun you had partying like it was 1899 (without typhoid, child labor, or gratuitous amounts of smog.)

Steampunk Black – A Welcome To Goths

This is Allison from Platform One. She doesn't know we're using her picture to illustrate Gothic people at The Steampunk World's Fair.

A brief note:

Not only is the Steampunk World’s Fair welcoming to all, novice or veteran, any gender or no gender, any size, shape, and age…

…we have particular respect for our Gothic brethren.  Some say Steampunk is “Goth Gone Brown”.  We don’t.  We say that Steampunk is a movement which wouldn’t exist had the Gothic movement not paved the way.  That’s part of why we have a number of performers whose rangers flit between Gothic and Steampunk – not that there’s any one authority on what is, or is not, “Steampunk”.

Some Steampunk events apparently don’t welcome Goths.  I’ll say it again, not only do we welcome everyone, we welcome Gothic folk in particular.  If you’re of the Gothic persuasion, we salute and honor you.  Without you, there would be no us.*

Anyway, whoever you are, come in!  Come in!  All manner of wonders await!!

*  Yes, we’re paraphrasing a Meat Loaf song, which is neither Gothic nor Steampunk.  So sue us.  We like Meat Loaf.  Well, some of us do, anyway.

Revilla Grooves & Gear / Revilla Mobile Music

Well, folks, it’s that time… we’re ready to reveal some of the phenomenal vendors and artisans who will be appearing at Steampunk World’s Fair.

Revilla Grooves & Gear

Revilla Grooves and Gear is the labor of love of Darren Revilla. For years, as DJ Darren, he spun Vinyl in the bars and clubs of New Jersey and NYC. A huge collection of records was amassed. Hip Hop Twelve inches, Rare Funk records, impossible to find Jazz Lp’s, Blues 78s, records from India to Africa, all found their way into the stacks. With so many great records on the wall, Darren decided to sell off a few to share the music and make a little extra cash. Ten years later an online business was launched.

Revilla Grooves and Gear is the online home for buying, sharing and selling the equipment needed to make old records sound beautiful.

Revilla Mobile Music

Revilla Mobile music provides an entire musical experience for parties, events, clubs, and gatherings. We are light, sound and music professionals dedicated to making your special occasion fun and memorable.

The music we play is the music you love, any genre from anywhere in the world. We want to make your guests smile, feel great and dance.

A party’s success depends on the venue, the food, the invited guests and the music. Let us take care of the tunes so you can take care of the rest.

Mark P. Donnelly

Prof. Mark P. Donnelly is a multi-award winning author, historian, screenwriter, and television producer as well as internationally renowned duelist, swashbuckler, and constant gentleman.

Currently, he has about 20 books in print – all of which are non-fiction – and all of which are on historical subjects.  In addition to his work in print, Mark P. Donnelly has scripted and/or produced nearly 200 hours of broadcast television for Discovery, History Channel, PBS, BBC, National Geographic, Biography, A&E, etc.

He is also a Professore di Armes in various forms of historical combat and western martial arts who has taught workshops around the world and is honored to have been frequently counted among the top instructors inEurope.  After nearly 14 years in England he recently returned to the colonies and currently resides in Pennsylvania.

When not otherwise scheduled, he will have a table for book signing and conversation. While he is aware that knowledge is power, he has been known to share anything he knows if asked nicely (and bribed with decent port or brandy).

White Elephant Burlesque Society

WEBS was the creative brainchild of Femme Fae la Butche and Viktor Devonne as a theatrical, fully realized inner circle of talented and ambitious burlesque performers. Each of them a headliner, the White Elephant Burlesque Society members perform for audiences with an array of skill and talents.

Our tongues are firmly in cheeks, our bosoms tightly in corsets, and our toes are a-tapping. We aim to bring the symbolism of freedom, joy, romance, sexuality, and theatrics that captivated the audiences of the original vaudeville and burlesque ages to the modern.

Born of a love of street theater, vaudeville and a desire to create a space to showcase the performance talent present in Portland’s goth community, Dark Follies began bringing its special brand of street Vaudeville to life in the dark hours of Portland’s summer First Friday Art Walk nights in the Autumn of 2008.

Makers Wanted!

The Do-It-Yourself ethic is a big part of Steampunk. We love to make, mod, recycle, upcycle, hack and create, and the Steampunk World’s Fair welcomes the maker spirit with open arms.
We’re looking for a few good Steampunks to lead hands-on workshops over the course of the weekend. Do you build cigar box guitars, make your own clothes, make household objects into amazing pieces of anachronistic art? Do you want the chance to pass on some of your awesome DIY skills, and swap ideas with like-minded folks? Let us know!

If you’re interested, please fill out a performance application as a presenter, and let us know you’re interested in giving a DIY/Maker workshop, and tell us a little about what you’d like to do.

The Imperial Amerikan Air Corp

Imagine you are strolling along the Steampunk Worlds Faire midway only to find a military expedition encampment. The Imperial Amerikan Air Corp has landed at SPWF 2012. Twin tents contain stenciled crates and casks, racks of weapons, and various pieces of gear set on hand for ready use. There are also cages with strange beasts captured from strange lands, trophy heads, and framed photos of previous expeditions decorate the walls. The imperial troopers are telling war stories, drinking, and playing cards as a troupe of exotic women wiggle to the strains of strange music emanating from a fancy little brass and leather box. A boisterous major extolls visitors to contribute to some far off war effort by having their picture taken with a handsome trooper and embedded in a pre-emptive war bond that can be downloaded from the either …or to enlist in the IAAC and defend the Amerikan Empire against foreign and alien incursions.

· Come hear Major Girth and his crew recount war stories of Imperial valor and prowess.

· Come see and participate in martial demonstrations of Imperial weapons training.

· Come see the exotic creatures captured during her Imperial Majesty’s alien campaigns.

· Come see the even more exotic Cavalcade of Fancy Ladies as they perform dance mysteries discovered in the darkest corners of foreign and alien ports!

· Come see what it means to be a trooper in the IAAC, and how you too might become one of “The Sky’s Finest.”

Official Press Release

Third annual Steampunk World’s Fair to host world-class entertainment, draw thousands to New Jersey

This May, thousands of Steampunks from around the globe will tune up their dirigibles, set their airships a’sail, and invent new transportation gadgets to descend on (of all places) New Jersey for the 3rd annual Steampunk World’s Fair.  This year the festival will be bigger than ever, drawing more attendees and hosting more guests and performers than any other Steampunk event in the world.

The event’s main contributor is visionary and Steampunk World’s Fair creator, Jeff Mach.  Mach has many years of experience as the chief organizer for over 100 events on the East Coast.  As Steampunk World’s Fair approaches its third year, Mach is well aware of the challenges he and his crew face.  “With the profusion of Steampunk events springing up throughout the world, we had to raise the bar for this year,” says Mach.  “So we now occupy, not just two hotels, but much of the outdoor area in between.  This has given us the capability to add new, interactive events unseen anywhere else.”

One such event will be the Midway and Carnival Obscura, a raucous, outdoor festival showcasing family friendly acts by day and transforming into a dark carnivale by night.  Fire performers, circus acts, sideshow spectacles, and many more entertainers will perform for revelers to feast their eyes on.  This event is one of several components that will make 2012 Steampunk World’s Fair’s greatest year yet.

Steampunk World’s Fair will run May 18-20 in Piscataway, NJ.  Tickets and VIP passes are on sale now; get yours before they sell out!

About Steampunk

Steampunk is a subculture whose members celebrate the beauty of yesterday alongside the technology of tomorrow.  Fanciful Victorian aesthetics blend seamlessly with ray guns and time machines to create a world where anything is possible.  There are no rules, just your imagination, and all are welcome on this great adventure.

About Steampunk World’s Fair

Steampunk World’s Fair, currently in its third year, is the largest Steampunk event in the world hosting thousands of attendees, guests, and performers annually.  This year will include new, fully immersive and interactive events to stir the imagination.  The festival will run May 18-20 in Piscataway, NJ.  Tickets and VIP passes are on sale now.  Get yours before they sell out!

Volunteering at SPWF

Lost Treasures of Steampunk: IndieGoGo Fundraiser Goes Live

The Steampunk Universe is full of uncanny creations. The Lost Treasures of Steampunk aims to make that universe just a little bit smaller.

We’re pleased to announce that our IndieGoGo Fundraiser is now live! Your contributions allow you to nominate and vote for under-rated, under-the-radar, and otherwise-unknown performers/vendors/artists/deserving Steampunk figures.

100% of the money goes to scholarships that help folks maintain a presence at Steampunk World’s Fair. That includes travel expenses (people), shipping costs (art installations), or recording (live performance). We will match all contributions up to our goal.

Strange Artifact

FAR EAST STEAM!

Why are hot dogs sold in packs of ten but buns sold in packs of eight?

Who, exactly, did we drunk-dial during that absinthe-and-opium bender?

Can an event that doesn’t showcase amazing acts from around the world truly be considered a World’s Fair?

These are the questions that keep us up at night, and while the first two remain a mystery, we can definitively answer the third: no, it cannot. Which is why the Steampunk World’s Fair has always aimed to bring you the best in not just amazing, not just fantastic, but global steampunk wonders. The Fair has already welcomed several guests and performers from Europe, but now we claim to be the first steampunk event to reach across the Pacific Ocean as well.

Hailing from Tokyo, Japan, Strange Artifact are at the vanguard of the growing Japanese steampunk movement. Vocalist MaRy and composer 130JET draw influence from J-Rock, video game soundtracks, and genres from around the globe in creating their own unique steampunk vision.

Formed in 2010, the band has performed at the world-famous Tokyo Design Festa and regularly appears at events held by Japanese underground subculture promoter Artism. After making their international debut last year through omnibuses alongside Professor Elemental, This Way to the Egress, the Clockwork Dolls, and other SPWF alums. Strange Artifact will release their first album The Antikythera Mechanism in April and have chosen a stage no greater than that of the Steampunk World’s Fair for their first overseas shows.

But that’s not all!  Along with today’s announcement, Strange Artifact has unveiled an IndieGoGo campaign to support their album release as well as help them complete the arrangements necessary to make their appearance at SPWF a memorable one. The band is offering some incredible and exclusive perks for donating, including stuff so cool we wouldn’t dare reveal the secret here, so go over to the campaign page and have a look!

Attendees who can understand Japanese are invited to check out their official homepage, while those fluent in English, Victorian, and Pirate are welcome to peruse their Facebook and ReverbNation pages.

From the visuals of Howl’s Moving Castle and the Final Fantasy series to kimono fashion and the bushido code, Japan has long been a source of inspiration and enjoyment for steampunk fans worldwide. We are proud to have run an event worthy of such attention from the other side of the world, and hope that you will join us in warmly welcoming Strange Artifact to America.
